CAN YOU TRUST YOUR VOLTMETER?

You can easily build or buy a perfectly good IC voltage reference and set your mind at ease about the accuracy of your meters.

Sometimes I wonder which of my portable digital voltmeters I can trust — the B&K, Fluke, or Amprobe. Usually, they’re pretty close but it bugs me not knowing whether they are right on the nose. Fortunately, these days, there are a number of very accurate voltage reference circuits that you can build or purchase for a few dollars.

POWER MOSFETs PART 2

Last time, we examined how to use power MOSFETs. This time, we’ll build two projects.

The first project is a transformerless voltage doubler that takes a DC voltage from 12 to 30 volts and doubles it. Unlike most other voltage doubler circuits, this design can supply amps of current. The second project uses a power MOSFET in a linear (rather than switching) application.

To Solder or Not

TO SOLDER OR NOT

Don’t let soldering crimp your style.

As a young ham radio enthusiast, I was taught that, when it comes to high-current DC or any RF connection, use solder, regardless of the connector design. I was told in certain terms that crimp-on connectors were at best short-sighted time savers. The purported benefits of a soldered connection over simply twisting two conductors together — or even professional crimping — include longevity and increased reliability.
