Choosing A Heatsink

CHOOSING A HEATSINK

Everything you need to know about selecting a heatsink but were afraid to ask.

Let’s face it — if this article was titled, "Thermal Analysis," you might put off reading it! But choosing a heatsink? Everybody understands what that’s all about, right? To make that choice, you have to do a little thermal analysis (gotcha!), but if you can do Ohm’s Law, you already know how!

THE SECRET LIFE OF A WIRE
A perfect wire should conduct a signal without adding noise, attenuation, or distortion. However, this isn’t the case!

A perfect wire should conduct a signal without adding noise, attenuation, or distortion. Whatever is electrically happening at one end of the wire should be happening at the other end exactly in the same form, no matter what the current, voltage, frequency, surroundings, or temperature. However, this isn’t the case.

How Phased Array Antennas Work

HOW PHASED ARRAY ANTENNAS WORK
Introductory tutorial on a special antenna type you need to know about.

Phased arrays have been used for years in military radars for long range detection of missiles. They’re also widely used in military and commercial aircraft radars and some satellites. These phased arrays are expensive, but today thanks to new technology and higher frequencies, phased arrays are smaller and more affordable making them practical for new wireless devices. This article is an introductory tutorial on this special antenna type you need to know about.

Add Sweep Function to Your RF Signal Generator

ADD SWEEP FUNCTION TO YOUR RF SIGNAL GENERATOR
Add a sweep function to my original RF generator build or any unit that is based on varactor diode tuning.

After I had designed an RF generator, I started to toy with the idea of adding a sweep function to it. The circuitry is quite economical to build, and draws its power through a short cable that plugs into a connector at the rear of the RF generator. Although this unit was created for use on my original generator design, the basic architecture can be modified for use with commercial RF generators that are based on varactor diode tuning.
