Watch for an upcoming article in the next issue of Nuts & Volts for a souped-up version of the Graphing Thermometer that’s written by Victor Chaney.
Build the Graphing Thermometer

BUILD THE GRAPHING THERMOMETER
This project joins an Arduino CPU, some temperature/humidity sensors, and a real time clock (RTC) module to a large (3.5 inch) high-resolution color LCD graphics display to create a fun and useful graphing thermometer.

Recently, I began to explore ways to improve and upgrade my “thermal monitoring technology” and came up with this simple, easy to build trend-plotting thermometer. This project features a large color graphics display to show the current temperature in big bold digits. Better than that, it also graphs the temperature trends over the most recent 4, 8, 16, or 24 hour period. Whether it be temperature trends, time and date, current/voltage readings, battery status, or other variables, consider giving your next project some extra pizazz by including an LCD color graphics display into the design!

Libraries and Headers in C: A Tutorial

LIBRARIES AND HEADERS IN C: A TUTORIAL

Learn how software utilizes libraries, and how you can create your own.

If you’ve written a program for a microcontroller board such as the Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Propeller QuickStart, you have relied on software libraries that provide constants and functions. Often, we use software libraries without thinking much about them. When you start to write libraries, it takes time to read documents, follow directions, and experiment with simple functions. Fortunately, after you understand how to create libraries and header files for the software tools you use, you’ll have a useful skill that can simplify programming tasks. Even if you never create a library, you probably want to know how they work and what they contain. This tutorial provides information that gives you a good start.

Build a MIDI Autoharp

BUILD A MIDI AUTOHARP
Build a MIDI controller in the form of an autoharp instrument.

This project is a follow-on from my MIDI lyre project featured in the July-August magazine. I’m going to describe how to build a MIDI autoharp. Like the lyre, this is a MIDI controller, so it doesn’t make any sounds itself. Instead, it sends MIDI messages to an external synthesizer. It’s the synthesizer that makes the sounds.

THE TRANSISTOR RADIO
Take a stroll down memory lane about the radio that’s still fun to collect today.

In 1954, the world was a far different place than it is now. Almost anything electronic required vacuum tubes — an invention dating back to the beginning of the 20th century that had yet to be improved on. Collecting early transistor radios that date back is a fun hobby. Here’s some history on how it all came about.

Pioneers of Electronics: David Sarnoff, Charles Steinmetz, Hugo Gernsback, Thomas Edison

David Sarnoff And The Birth Of The AM Radio

DAVID SARNOFF AND THE BIRTH OF THE AM RADIO
Sarnoff was one of the pioneers of the era of mass communications.

Sarnoff would take radio out of the exclusive province of the transportation industry and embryonic ham radio hobbyists, and put it into every American home. There it would share space with the other appliances that the inventors of the early 20th century were delivering to increasing numbers of consumers. His stubborn pursuit of technology turned his employer, Radio Corp. of America, into a powerhouse in less than a decade. Sarnoff was one of the pioneers of the era of mass communications, transforming America from a nation of local newspapers and pamphleteers into an era where brute technological force allowed a handful of networks of, first, radio stations to flourish, and then television, to create a near-uniform electronic mass media.

The Man Who Invented The Future

THE MAN WHO INVENTED THE FUTURE
Hugo Gernsback was the world’s first futurist — one who not only speculated about the future, but also worked to make it happen.

Who was Hugo Gernsback? The answer depends on whom you ask. “Gernsback published the first science fiction magazine!” a science fiction reader will declare. Ask an engineer and you might hear, “Gernsback … wasn’t he involved in early experiments with television broadcasting?” Others will recall Gernsback’s radio magazines. A radio historian will tell you that Hugo Gernsback owned radio station WRNY, introduced the first home radio set (1905), and championed the cause of radio amateurs.

THE EDISON CELL
Rediscover the secrets of a 100+ year old battery whose time may finally have come.

With the wild fluctuations in fuel prices over the years, world concern over global warming, and simply the idea of creating new and more sustainable technologies, immense interest and progress continues in the world of battery development. Perhaps one day soon we’ll have a battery that displays no “memory” effect; can be completely discharged or overcharged without harm; and require no complex computerized management system. This battery could even prove so durable it will be immune to damage from vibration and not break down chemically over time. In operation, such a battery might also routinely outlast the very vehicle or machine it was designed to operate in! Lastly, we could complete our wish list by adding in the impossible: low materials toxicity, simple construction, and, of course, good energy density. Does such a battery sound like too much to hope for? Thomas Edison didn’t think so.

RF Interference

RF INTERFERENCE
RFI is everywhere — is it interference to you or is it interference by you? Possibly both! But fortunately there are ways to keep it in line.

The phenomenon known as RF interference — RFI to its many friends and acquaintances — involves interference caused by signals propagated wirelessly as radio waves. Most people don’t know (or care) about RFI until their garage door opener won’t work.

Kelvin Low Resistance Probe

KELVIN LOW RESISTANCE PROBE

Use this handy probe to check vias and traces on your circuit boards for their resistance.

After talking to several engineering friends, most thought that my Kelvin ohmmeter had a limited use in their toolbox. So, I thought it would be more useful to have a handheld Kelvin probe for testing two- and four-layer boards to check vias and traces for their resistance to prevent ground loops. This probe uses “idiot” lights and sound, and measures resistances below .005 ohms. It can’t really be compared to handheld probes on the market that measure above one ohm due to their lead resistance.

However, it expanded to include a programmable function generator that can produce a sine wave, triangle wave, square wave, etc. I then went further to include a frequency counter to measure the frequency of the function generator output.
